A Definitive Guide to Procuring Functional Mushrooms in Turkey

The majority of commercially available mushroom products are manufactured from mycelium-based powder, not from the actual fruiting body.

— THE SCENARIO —

You have researched. You have decided. You are ready to purchase.

Then you open Trendyol, type "Lion's Mane," and 47 products appear. Prices vary widely. Every listing claims to be "premium," "100% pure," "the best."

Which one do you choose?

This entry answers that question—leaving marketing language aside.

— FIRST, UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTAL DISTINCTION —

Ground powder ≠ Extract

The fungal cell wall is composed of chitin. The human digestive system cannot break down chitin. If the product you hold is merely dried and ground mushroom, the beta-glucans remain trapped behind the chitin wall and are excreted without absorption.

A high-quality product must have undergone hot water extraction. This process ruptures the chitin wall, liberating the bioactive compounds. The product label should state "hot water extract" or "hot water extraction."

Fruiting body ≠ Mycelium on grain (MOG)

A substantial portion of products on the market are produced by growing mycelium on grain and grinding the entire mass. The resulting product may be 40–80% oats or rice. Bioactive compound concentration in such products is minimal.

The phrase to look for is "100% fruiting body." If the label does not explicitly state this, consider it a red flag.

— 5 CHECKPOINTS —

1. Is a COA available? COA—Certificate of Analysis—is a batch-specific document issued by an independent laboratory. It reports beta-glucan content, heavy metal testing, and microbiological purity. If the seller can provide this on their website or upon request, they are a serious producer. If they cannot, they cannot substantiate their claimed values.

2. What is the substrate? Mushrooms absorb everything present in their growing environment. Substrate quality directly determines product quality. Oak sawdust, beech wood, and specially formulated organic bases—these must be documented. If the substrate composition is not disclosed, question marks remain.

3. What is the source of the strain? Mycelium—the seed stock—determines genetic stability. Strains sourced from certified production facilities ensure a consistent bioactive profile. Many products on the market use strains of unknown origin. These carry a high risk of degeneration and marked batch-to-batch quality variation.

4. What is the drying temperature? Above 60°C: enzymes denature. Above 70°C: volatile compounds are lost. Low-temperature drying at 42–45°C preserves the bioactive profile. A manufacturer who shares this information demonstrates confidence in their process.

5. Which channel are you buying through? Online marketplaces (Trendyol, Hepsiburada) host thousands of products. When choosing among them, apply the four questions above. If a seller cannot answer, move on.

Purchasing directly from a brand’s website is more secure—you can directly observe the transparency of information.

— CHANNEL-BASED EVALUATION —

Trendyol / Hepsiburada / Amazon TR: Easy access, high price competition. However, these platforms lack quality oversight—every product appears equal. List the sellers who share COAs; eliminate the rest.

Brand websites: You can directly view the production process, substrate, and COA. The level of transparency becomes apparent there.

Pharmacies / health stores: Functional mushroom products remain limited in this channel. What is available is usually high-priced imported goods—with no quality guarantee and difficult COA verification.

Imported vs. Domestic: Products sourced from China and the USA dominate the market. Most are MOG—not fruiting body. Domestic production is small but growing—and holds an advantage in traceability.

These criteria also define MYCOVITA’s own production standard: 100% fruiting body, batch-specific COA, Netherlands-certified strains, drying at 42–45°C. We recommend seeking the same criteria from other producers.
